As one of history’s bestselling musicians, Neil Diamond has had a massive influence on other performers. The legendary rock singer-songwriter’s longtime fans in the Midwestern United States are likely to remember one particular tribute act…

In 1989, Mark Sardina asked Claire Stingl to form a band with him. With Mike having already garnered the nickname ‘Lightning’, Claire decided to christen herself ‘Thunder’. The pair went on to get hitched and belt out Neil Diamond classics together across the Midwest, attracting a large following as a result.

In January 2026, the biopic of their rise to fame, Song Sung Blue, was released in UK cinemas to critical acclaim. It’s a life-affirming tale starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as Mike and Claire Sardina, but how true is it to their real-life story? We at Sky HISTORY decided to investigate. Spoilers for Song Sung Blue follow…

The Sardinas’ lives before fame

Mike Sardina and Claire Stingl both hailed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, that’s hardly all they had in common. Long before meeting each other, they found love with different partners. Mike had two children, Mike Jr and Angelina, while Claire had two of her own, Dayna and Rachel.

Mike and Claire both later divorced their respective partners. Claire first met Mike in 1987, when she auditioned to join his band. While that plan didn’t quite work out, Mike reached out to her two years later with a very different offer. Why don’t the pair start a Neil Diamond tribute act together?

Claire – who, before then, had specialised in singing Patsy Cline numbers – didn’t need to be asked twice. ‘At the time I was a single parent of two kids, living alone and transferring from one place to another,’ Claire explained in 2003. Originally, the deal was meant to be strictly business – but romance soon blossomed.

New love – and a big break

Craig Brewer, the writer and director of Song Sung Blue, has revealed that the ‘business meeting’ between Mike and Claire took them to a ballgame. ‘And later on, they went down to the river and they got ice cream cones,’ Brewer said.

Brewer adds: ‘Claire told me that their evening didn’t end. I think he was sweet on her and didn’t want to say they were on a date.’

It wasn’t long before Lightning and Thunder were performing to rapturous applause at state fairs. The pair even married at the Wisconsin State Fair in 1994.

Song Sung Blue effectively captures the fun chemistry enjoyed by the real-life Mike and Claire. A later scene, though, might appear to stretch credibility. Eddie Vedder, the lead vocalist of Pearl Jam, invites Lightning and Thunder to be his own band’s support act for a gig in Milwaukee. So, did this actually happen?

Amazingly, yes – if not in quite the same way as in the film. Lightning and Thunder indeed sang with Pearl Jam, but for their encore at Milwaukee’s Summerfest in July 1995.

Tragedy strikes for Mike and Claire Sardina

In May 1999, Claire was gardening at the home she now shared with Mike. Then, a nearby car suddenly veered off the road and struck Claire’s left leg, which subsequently had to be amputated below the knee. Claire also went through mental turmoil as she struggled to fully recover from the accident. These horrific effects largely kept her away from the stage, and bookings for Lightning and Thunder plummeted.

In the early Noughties, the band were back into the habit of gigging regularly for Midwest crowds. This renaissance ended abruptly in July 2006, after Mike Sardina had a fall at his home. He soon fell ill and went to hospital, where he was found to have bleeding on the brain.

Mike Sardina’s death

Despite receiving surgery for his condition, Mike Sardina passed away on 27th July 2006 aged just 55. Mike’s physical decline and death are portrayed somewhat accurately in Song Sung Blue, albeit with some dramatic embellishment. This includes the fictionalised Mike dying in a car just as he was set to meet Neil Diamond himself for the first time.

The real Claire Sardina had the honour of meeting Diamond in 2008. Since Mike’s death, she has formed a new musical duo with Toney Luciano, ‘Thunder After Lighting’. This band name fittingly commemorates the memory of Mike Sardina and the incredible journey he embarked on with his beloved soulmate by his side.
