Video Description
In this 3-minute student-led film, we explore the untold story behind The Black Side of the Poppy, honouring Johnson, an African American World War I hero. Ninety-seven years after his death, in 2015, Johnson was awarded the Medal of Honour by President Barack Obama, recognising his extraordinary courage and sacrifice. This film was created as part of The History Award, a 2024 pilot by Sky HISTORY in partnership with Dame Alice Owen’s School. Year 9 pupils were challenged to craft 3–5 minute WWI films, unearthing untold stories, exploring family histories, and asking bold questions. Students worked with the Hearst Networks creative team, learning to shoot, edit, and bring history to life. Our ambition is simple - to inspire young filmmakers to bring history to life.
