Getting Your Five a Day

Happy birthday to BBC Five Live, the little radio station that sprang onto the airwaves on this day in 1994. Rising from the ashes of the unimaginatively named ‘Radio Five’, baffled listeners just couldn’t tell whether the entertainment offered was live or not. After many months of consultation, the Beeb’s bigwigs decided that sticking ‘live’ after the name might make things clearer. The station soon proved itself as the perfect home for angry Arsenal fans to scream, ‘THEY’RE A JOKE. THEY’RE SIMPLY A JOKE’ at Alan Green while parked in a lay-by.
