A small island nation on the western edge of Europe, Britain became one of the world's most powerful empires. Despite being a constitutional monarchy, Britain is one of the world's oldest democracies. Over the course of its long history, Britain has suffered defeat and triumph and has flourished as an empire and an industrial power. While its status as a world power has long since declined, British influence lives on through its language and culture.
