Knightfall Survey: Who should be made a knight or a dame?

A fifth of Brits think JK Rowling should be knighted, according to HISTORY's Knightfall survey.

The Harry Potter author, tops the poll as the star who should have a royal accolade bestowed on them.

A further one in six Brits would like to see Stephen Fry pick up the title, while Joanna Lumley was another popular choice.

HISTORY commissioned the research, to launch series two of Knightfall, starting Tuesday 2nd July at 9pm.

Many Brits believe a knighthood is the ultimate honour, and it’s no surprise to see national treasures like Stephen Fry and JK Rowling at the top of our list. They’ve both contributed enormously to society, and appear to be hardworking and decent people, which the public values greatly.

However, the British public willing something doesn’t always make it so, as there is a very complicated procedure in place to make people knights or dames.

JK Rowling has already been given the Order of the Companion of Honour, appearing in the Queen’s birthday list in 2017, but is yet to make full dame-hood.

Just under a tenth also think David Beckham should finally be made a Sir.

Forty-five per cent of those polled believe a knight or damehood is the highest honour a person can possibly have.

Four in 10 say in order to earn one, the recipient must have done something that betters mankind.

A quarter think that person must be a good role model for children, and 36 like their knights or dames to have performed an incredible act of bravery.
One in five want their knights and dames to make them feel ‘proud to be British’.

Twenty per cent of the population confess to looking forward to the lists of honours coming out each year, so they can see if their favourites made it.
However, not all Brits agree with the concept of knighthoods, with 35 per cent of respondents believing women should be knighted exactly the same as men, rather than being made dames.

And almost half of the population think the entire concept is ‘old fashioned’, with 29 per cent saying they’d turn down the offer it if was given to them.

Thirty-two per cent even say they respect those that have been offered a knighthood and turned it down, such as scientist Stephen Hawking.

Three-quarters of Brits polled via OnePoll.com also confess to having no idea what the differences are between a CBE, OBE and MBE.

The concept of knighthoods is something with deep roots in British hisdtory. But while knights like the ones in our show Knightfall do things very differently to knights and dames today, often they have many similar attributes. Honour and respect are traits that are just as important now as they were centuries ago.

World's strongest Knight

To celebrate the launch of Knight Fight, we invited former World's Strongest Man, Eddie Hall to give armoured combat a try.

While brute strength is a bonus for armoured combat, there's a lot of skill required and we put Eddie through a rigorous medieval training routine, just like Rocky but with armour.

You have to admire the bravery of the guy who hit Eddie Hall in the face. Even if you were wearing a suit of armour would you even dare? As Eddie says, 'this really isn't playfighting, these guys are hurting each other.'

Watch Knight Fight Tuesdays at 9, only on HISTORY.

First tease promo of Mark Hamill in Season two of drama series ‘Knightfall’

It's not a great surprise to learn that George Lucas based his order of intergalactic warrior monks on the Knights Templar. So it's rather fitting that The Last Jedi, himself, Mark Hamill is joining Knightfall season 2, playing a Templar Knight - in news that will get fanboys' heads spinning.

Hamill joins the cast as “Talus,” a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran of the Crusades, who survived captivity for ten years in the Holy Land and is tasked with training the new initiates to the Order. The voice over in this tease reveals Talus’ moral conflict with Landry (Cullen) as a Templar. The sword is the symbol that unites and divides the brotherhood this season, and its flames foreshadow what is to come for the Templars on Friday the 13th.  Cullen plays the courageous and headstrong Templar Knight, Landry, who last season we left grief-stricken but hopeful.

Check out the tease promo below.

Storage Wars host reveals $7.5 million find

Storage Wars host, Dan Dotson has revealed an amazing story about one man's incredible $7.5 million find. The lucky bargain bought a unit for $500 at a sale in Indio, California and when he opened it he discovered a safe stuffed full of cash.

Surprisingly the previous owners of the unit weren't too happy about saying goodbye to such a huge sum. Attorneys for the previous owners soon reached out to them to offer a $600,00 (£465,000), reward to return the cash.

In the true Storage Wars spirit, the new owners weren't ready to accept the first offer and negotiated a fee of $1.2, returning the remaining $6.3 million. That's certainly a healthy profit margin on a $500 investment.

Don't miss out on the brand new Storage Wars, weeknights from 7pm on Blaze.

The Clinton Affair

January 2018 marked 20 years since the start of the investigation that led to only the second impeachment trial in America's history, and the first in the modern era.

From Academy Award winner, Alex Gibney – and with exclusive access to the former White House intern who nearly brought down an American President, Monica Lewinsky - The Clinton Affair episodes 1 and 2 premiere on HISTORY  on Saturday 8th December, from 9pm.

With remarkable and exclusive access, this six-part documentary series charts the story of  the vast right-wing conspiracy against the Clintons and the West Wing conspiracy against Monica Lewinsky.  It reveals an America bitterly divided, still struggling with the legacy of the disgrace of another American President over 20 years previously. Sex, power, money, secrecy, lies, betrayal, ideological warfare; the series plays out like an elaborate political thriller. The series has exclusive access to Monica Lewinsky, her family and her legal archive which disclose access to some of the other principals in the scandal.

New series River Hunters coming to history

Today, we're pleased to announce the commission of a brand new series, River Hunters for HISTORY featuring Rick Edwards and YouTube River Hunter Beau Ouimette on a mission to find underwater treasure
The eight-part series pairs US YouTube sensation Beau Ouimette, a river detectorist with over 30 years’ experience, with presenter and keen swimmer Rick Edwards, as they search the UK’s waterways for archaeological finds.
River Hunters will see Rick and river-searching expert Beau, visit some of the most historically significant sites across Britain: covering iconic events and battles including Roman Briton, the Wars of the Roses, the Reformation and the English Civil War. Their searches of these unexplored rivers and waterways unearth treasures from the past which reveal how our various ancestors used to live.
As the artefacts surface from under layers of silt and rocks, the duo will meet with local archaeologists and historians to unearth the stories and people behind the finds.  Spanning each river’s layered past, the new series will offer a fresh perspective and even redefine our history as we know it.
Using state-of-the-art technology, archive maps and contemporaneous accounts from the period, Beau and Rick perform the first underwater archaeological digs in some of the most exciting and iconic historical sites in Britain, often in dangerous and fast-flowing water.

Co-host, Rick Edwards is super excited about being involved in the show, saying, 'I’m delighted that we’re able to put to bed the idea that it's just shopping trolleys and old bikes in the UK's rivers - we found some truly extraordinary artefacts, bringing whole new perspectives to the stories from our rich past. I also got very cold.'

River Hunters will air on HISTORY in the UK in 2019.
