A military junta led by General Augusto Pinochet and backed by the United States of America, overthrows the elected Marxist Government of Salvador Allende in Chile.

Wilma Rudolph becomes the first female American athlete to win three gold medals at an Olympic Games. She wins the 100 metres, 200 metres and the 4 x 100 metres relay at the Rome Olympics.

The San Francisco police arrest actor and director Fatty Arbuckle on suspicion of manslaughter. Although a jury eventually found Arbuckle not guilty, the scandal destroyed his career.

American Revolution: American troops led by George Washington are defeated by the British at the Battle of Brandywine Creek.

An Anglo-Dutch-Austrian force, commanded by the Duke of Marlborough, defeats the French at the Battle of Malplaquet, the last major land battle of the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
