Private First Class Desmond T. Doss is presented the Congressional Medal of Honour for outstanding bravery as a medical corpsman, the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the nation’s highest military award.

English nurse Edith Cavell is executed as a spy by a German firing squad for helping captured British soldiers to escape from behind German lines.
