Sky HISTORY - This Day in HISTORY
On this day:

First MTV Music Awards are held

Music Video Television Music Video Music Awards!

You can forget about your Academy Awards and your Baftas and your Knighthoods and your Sainthoods and your Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme ‘woggles of hope’. There is obviously only one trophy that really matters to all member of the human race. I speak, of course, of the majestic Moonman, symbol of the mighty MTV Video Music Awards. Which does feel a little over the top. After all, MTV already has the word ‘music’ in there. So, in full, they are the Music Television Video Music Awards. And when you put it like that: you sound insane. It was on this prestigious day in 1984 that the first ever ceremony was held at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City and hosted, for some reason, by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler. The Cars won Video of the Year for their song You Might Think, beating Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which now seems a little odd. Meanwhile, The Beatles won the Video Vanguard award for their contribution to music video advancement. Unbelievably they didn’t reform to pick up their trophy. Ingrates.
