A novice's Guide to haggling

To haggle: To bargain or wrangle over the price of an item.

If Pawn Stars has have taught us anything, it's that in the biz of buying and selling, haggling is paramount – on both sides. Pawn Stars UK is no different, and you're going to see that Big Mark, Little Mark and Marco are experts when it comes to getting the best price. We're letting you in on the secrets we've learnt from them, so here's our guide on how to haggle and get the best deal!

1. Do your research

You'll need at least a rough understanding of the item's worth before you present it at a pawnshop. That'll help to manage your expectations and ensure that you don't deal at an unreasonable price. On top of this, it'll be more impressive if you can wax lyrical about the item's history and how it came into your hands. Bonus Points: For any 'originals' or 'first editions' etc. any supporting documents confirming that they're 'the real deal' will push the price right up!

2. Play your part

You need to build a rapport before you haggle with your opponent, so joke with them, befriend, and flatter them. It's all about the acting! Practice your looks of hesitation and shock and especially your You can't be serious?! chuckle. You might not win an Oscar, but it'll increase your chances of getting a good deal, and a friendly one, at that!

3. Offer a 'bundle'

If you've got some stuff that fits with the item you're trying to flog as a set – chuck it in! Especially if it's low value and of low importance to you. The buyer will love the idea of getting a bundle or a set of items and will offer you a higher price. If there's one thing our Pawn Stars can't resist, it's a collection.

4. Be polite, courteous and respectful

It's so important to keep it cool and stay calm. Don't make a scene – but of course be assertive when it matters, just ensure you choose your words carefully (a.k.a. swearing is not going to get you a sale!). It's important to remember that these guys buy every day – they know what they're talking about.

5. Practice your We've got a deal handshake

You'll need to seal the deal with a strong, confident handshake. No time for a limp shake or sweaty palms here!
